It is crucial that you do not lift your head further than your back or shoulders, but keep everything straight. The beneficial key here is that your stomach is performing the exercise and not your arms or head, thus helping to protect your back.
An exercise to work those ‘love handles’ that can be performed in conjunction with the ‘basic crunch’ is the ‘side crunch.’ The procedure is the same as in the ‘basic crunch’ only this time as you raise your upper torso, twist your body a little to one side. Then repeat the exercise on the other side.
As well as exercising your mid stomach and side areas, you need to include other exercises that will work on your lower and upper stomach too. This will ensure that you cover the whole area and help to acquire a flat stomach.
