For weight training, what pieces of basic equipment are best to start a home gym?
Question by EatYourVeggies: For weight training, what pieces of basic equipment are best to start a home gym?
I’m getting back into shape and build strength with weight training, but there are no decent gyms around me. I do strength training without weights, but I’m looking to build my upper body, legs and overall muscle mass and power for outdoor activities and increased general fitness– not bodybuilding. So, I want to start with adding a few affordable pieces of equipment at home. I’m not going to have a spotter during the times I can work out. Any unusual ideas? It can be something unusual, maybe I haven’t thought about, rather than the standard weights.

Well a good set of adjustable dumb bells is a great asset. If you are doing pushups, I might suggest push up bars to help with the range of motion. A chin up bar is a great exercise, but you can make that yourself between a door frame, or coming out of the roof.
With that equipment you can build strength well. P90X is a program that utilizes these pieces, maybe check it out.
Other pieces you might like, if you plan to work out solo would be a bench for fly’s and stuff…
I wouldn’t recommend big pieces since they get expensive very fast.

i read this a while ago and only had a set of dumbbells with a few weights. I invested in a barbell bar and a cheap floor step (like in the images) and found this was more than enough to do what I wanted for a while.
the workout is quite good and very effective if you want to go a bit harder and increase your reps and weights. there is however nothing like a fully decked out gym with everything you need.
but to start the attached was really good!
